Friday Photo Tip | Straight Lines
This week’s photo tip is a really simple photo fix that is often overlooked. It can really make the difference between a photo that is polished and one that looks like a quick snapshot. The tip is this- make sure your lines are straight!
Any pro will tell you that a dead giveaway for an amateur shot is crooked horizons, or any other crooked line in your photo really. There are VERY few exceptions to this rule and is one of those things that you need to perfect before you can break the rule. The basic idea is that your horizon should be straight. EVEN if a horizon is not in your photo. Imagine there is one and make it straight. Is there a wall in your photo? It should be perpendicular to the floor. Is there a kitchen counter? It should be parallel to the floor.
The best way to achieve this is in camera when you take the photo. Pay attention and make things straight before you click the shutter. Now, life is fast and sometimes it just doesn’t happen in camera. That is the case for probably a quarter of the photos I take during a session. When my lines aren’t straight, I fix them when editing. On your phone or computer you can do this with the crop tool. Give it a little twist and just like that, your photo is better!
