Friday Photo Tip | Shadow

The week’s Friday Photo Tip is a lighting technique that can help separate your subject from the background and make your image stand out. You can do this by shooting into shadow.

If you position your subject so that they are lit by your light source, but the background isn’t you can create this effect. One great example of this is a garage (I don’t have one, so you won’t see it pictured here) but if you position your subject at the edge of your open garage, the light will illuminate your subject well and then the light will quickly fall off behind them into shadow causing them to stand out from the background. You can also do this at the edge of a field, through a window or door, etc.

You’ll find some examples below. Notice how your eye is drawn right to the subject in these photos. Experiment with this lighting at home and if you get some good results I’d love to see them on social media!
