Friday Photo Tip | Fireworks

Happy early 4th, everyone!

In honor of Independence Day tomorrow, I thought I’d use this week’s FPT to share a lighting hack for low-light photos. This hack works great when photographing your kids and family against a backdrop of fireworks, campfire, or any low-light situation when you don’t want to use your phone or camera’s built-in flash.

So here’s the hack —-> Use a flashlight!

You can use the good ‘ole fashioned battery powered kind or a friend’s cell phone. You simply hold it up and off to the side to light your subject so that it just looks like ambient light! You’ll get a well-lit subject that doesn’t look “flashed” against the backdrop of your choice. And unlike a built-in flash, you can control the way the light looks and falls simply by moving the light up, down, closer or farther from your subject. If you can have a friend help you, even better!

👆🏻Obviously, my son is holding a flashlight here, but I am also holding one above my head and shining it on both of my boys for a little extra light.
